Although American Motors Corporation (AMC) was only in operation from 1954 to 1988, their cars loom large over the landscape of American automotive history. The AMC Rambler convertible, a model which AMC purchased from Nash Motors in 1954, became one of America's iconic vehicles.
AMC Rambler convertible tops actually began much earlier, with the Rambler 1913 touring car. The AMC Ramber soft top had a resurgence in post-war America: after WWII, Nash wanted to produce an affordable small car, but steel shortages limited their manufacturing options. The Nash Rambler convertible top was a clever solution to this production problem.
AMC faltered again in the 1970s, until the company struck a deal with Renault to bring the Renault Alliance convertible top to the American market. This collaboration revitalized AMC for many years, and the Renault Alliance soft top proved to be a popular model.
