When discussing the Giulietta it’s important to distinguish between the newer version and the classic. The original (classic) Alfa Romeo Giulietta was introduced in 1954 and built entirely in Milan. It debuted as a coupe, but Alfa soon debuted a sedan, followed by a two-seater Giulietta convertible.
The Giulietta and its sister Alfa Romeo sports cars helped to define the aesthetic of post-war Italy. They were as stylish as they were expensive, small and light and rounded.
Compared to the aesthetic of post-war American cars – large, boxy, and bedecked with tail fins – the Alfa Romeo was a declaration of European style and character.
The Giulietta convertible particularly captured the imagination. It was driven by an assassin in “Day of the Jackal” (1973), by a fiery stockbroker in “L’Eclisse” (1962), and more recently was featured in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999).
