Known as the Shelby Cobra convertible in North America, the Shelby AC Cobra was a joint venture between AC Cars and Ford, using a Bristol engine. The Cobra AC Bristol convertible top added to its appeal as a British sports car, while the Shelby name brought it name recognition in the American market.
The feisty replacement Cobra AC Bristol soft top was a brisk seller, in production from 1962 through 1968. Shelby designed the AC Cobra convertible as a "Corvette killer," with a more powerful engine and a lighter weight. Shelby loved the Cobra AC Bristol convertible so much that he kept his original model as a personal car.
