Known as the "Junior Lincoln" in the 1960s, the replacement Mercury Comet convertible top was originally planned as an Edsel, but was reassigned to the Mercury division at the last minute. Along with its sister model the Ford Falcon, the Mercury Comet soft top was a popular compact and mid-size car model throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

The Mercury Monterey convertible top was introduced in 1952 as a full-size luxury vehicle. Similar to the Mercury Park Lane convertible top, the Monterey was a strong seller that went on to displace the Mercury Park Lane and Mercury Montclair from the automaker's lineup in the late 1960s.
