In 1994 Ford released the Mustang Cobra, a souped-up and sportier version of the already popular and muscular Ford Mustang. Compared to the standard Mustang, the Cobra offered about 100 more horsepower, an improved engine (which differed based on the model year – at the end of its run, the Cobra came with a four-valve DOHC V8 engine compared to the Mustang GT’s two-valve SOHC V8), and a slightly different hood, front bumper, and rear spoiler. To complete the package, the rear bumper is imprinted with “COBRA” instead of “MUSTANG.”

The Cobra proved to be a popular variant, and was offered for a decade. Convertible Cobras produced during this run came with a 2-piece convertible top from the factory. We offer four replacement top options: the full top kit, a top with window, top only or window only, and a budget 1-piece top with a plastic window. If you are not sure which one you want, feel free to contact us to discuss your options.

The factory convertible top fabric and color combinations were:

  • 1994-2004: Black or White, in Sailcloth vinyl
  • 1994-1998: Saddle, in Sailcloth vinyl
  • 1994-2004: Parchment, in Sailcloth vinyl
  • 2002-2004: Black and Medium Parchment, in Twillfast

But as with all of our tops, we offer a variety of custom colors and fabrics. Just let us know which combination you want, and we can order it for you!

Q: What fabrics do you offer for Ford Mustang convertible tops?

A. We offer quality replacement convertible tops for Mustangs by both EZ On and Robbins. Depending on the model year, we offer tops in pinpoint vinyl, Haartz Stayfast cloth (also known as Canvas & Mohair), Twilfast RPC cloth, and sailcloth textured vinyl for more recent models.

For each model year, we will let you know which fabrics were the factory style – for example, the factory top material for the 1987 and 1988 Ford Mustang was the pinpoint vinyl for white tops, and the Stayfast cloth for all other colors.

As with all of our convertible tops, regardless of which model year and factory style cloth originally was used for your Ford Mustang, we can always substitute a different cloth. All of the materials we offer can be customized and swapped in, just let us know what color and material you want, and we will be happy to order it for you!

mustang convertible rear windowWhen shopping for a replacement convertible top window for your vehicle, it’s important to consider the difference between glass windows and vinyl windows (also known as plastic windows).

Glass convertible top windows have been the industry standard since convertible automobiles were introduced, and glass windows offer what every owner wants: solid rear window protection from the elements, as well as durability and safety.  Glass convertible top windows are made of DOT-rated safety glass and are perfectly safe for your car.

But did you know that vinyl convertible top windows offer a great value alternative when you are seeking to restore your convertible top?  Vinyl convertible top windows are made of DOT rated 40-guage plastic, and withstand the weather and wear and tear over the years you own your car.  As such, they are a great alternative when considering how to get the best value for your money.

Are plastic windows actually Plexiglas?

This is a question is based on a common misunderstanding about glass versus plastic windows.  Plexiglas is not used for automotive windows, rather, safety glass is used.  When we talk about “plastic convertible top windows”, we are referring to soft, Vinyl 40-guage plastic windows.

Do plastic convertible top windows feel like glass convertible top windows?

No.  Vinyl convertible top windows are much softer and have some flexibility in them.

Why would I buy vinyl convertible top windows instead of glass convertible top windows?

If you are looking to save money without sacrificing quality, vinyl windows offer a great alternative for you.

Are vinyl convertible top windows available for all makes and models?

Not all years/makes/models have vinyl windows as an available alternative; however, many popular models do have this less-expensive option.  Here are a few examples of cars which have replacement convertible tops available with both glass windows and vinyl windows:

1994 through 2004 Ford Mustang Convertibles

1996 through 2000 Chrysler Sebring, and 2001 through 2006 Chrysler Sebring Convertibles

1989 through 1997 Mazda Miata, and 1999 through 2005 Mazda Miata Convertibles

1967 through 1969 Chevy Camaro, 1987 through 1989 Chevy Camaro, 1990 through 1993 Chevy Camaro, and also 1994 through 2002 Chevy Camaro Convertibles
